DTF vs UV DTF: Which Transfer Is Right for Your Project?

DTF and UV DTF both start as designs printed on film, and both let you order custom full-color graphics without screens and with no minimum order. They are built for different jobs, though. DTF is made for fabric. UV DTF is made for hard, smooth surfaces. Choosing the right one before you order saves you from buying transfers that will not work on your product. This guide compares the two and shows how to order each from DTF Sirius.

What Is a DTF Transfer?

DTF stands for direct-to-film. We print your design onto a special film, and you heat-press that film onto the garment. With our settings (315°F–325°F with medium-firm pressure for 6–12 seconds, then an immediate hot peel), the design bonds to the fabric. Our step-by-step pressing guide covers every setting.

What Is a UV DTF Transfer?

UV DTF is also printed on film, but it is a peel-and-stick transfer that needs no heat press. It is made for clean, dry, smooth hard surfaces such as glass, metal, ceramic, hard plastic, and sealed wood. UV DTF is not intended for fabric.

How to apply a UV DTF transfer

  1. Make sure the surface is clean, dry, and smooth.
  2. Peel off the backing.
  3. Place the design where you want it.
  4. Rub firmly over the whole design with a squeegee or card.
  5. Slowly peel away the top film.

Let the transfer set for 24 hours before washing. After that, hand washing is recommended; avoid dishwashers and soaking.

Where UV DTF works best

  • Hard, smooth items made of glass, metal, ceramic, hard plastic, or sealed wood
  • Branding on hard goods where a heat press is not practical
  • Logo decals and labels for businesses and events

How to Choose: Four Questions

1. What are you decorating?

If it is worn or made of fabric, choose DTF. If it is a hard, smooth object, UV DTF is the better match. If your item is somewhere in between, such as a coated or textured surface, email us before you order.

2. Do you have a heat press?

DTF is applied with heat and pressure, and a heat press gives the most reliable bond. UV DTF is peel-and-stick and needs no heat press, which makes it easy to use on items that cannot go into a press.

3. How will the finished item be used and cleaned?

Garments that go through the laundry call for DTF, along with the care steps on our FAQ. UV DTF suits hard items that are hand washed: let the transfer set for 24 hours first, and avoid dishwashers and soaking. If an item needs to go through a dishwasher or be left to soak, UV DTF is not the right fit.

4. What is your budget per sheet?

Can You Use Both?
