DTF and UV DTF basics

What is DTF printing, and how does it work?

Direct-to-film (DTF) printing is a process in which your design is printed onto a special transfer film. You then apply the transfer to your garment with a heat press. The result is a vibrant, full-color print for cotton and polyester fabrics.

What is the difference between DTF and UV DTF transfers?

DTF transfers are heat-applied and made for fabric, such as T-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies and tote bags. UV DTF transfers are peel-and-stick transfers for clean, dry, smooth hard surfaces such as glass, metal, ceramic, hard plastic and sealed wood. They are applied without a heat press and are not intended for fabric. You can shop them in our UV DTF Stickers collection.

What can I apply DTF transfers to?

DTF transfers work on cotton and polyester fabrics. Common uses include T-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies and tote bags. For specialty, coated or heat-sensitive materials, we recommend pressing a test piece first.

How do I place an order?

Is there a minimum order?

No, we have no minimum orders. You can order a single transfer by size or one 22 x 12 inch gang sheet.

What gang sheet sizes do you offer?

All of our gang sheets are 22 inches wide. In the DTF and UV DTF Gang Sheet Builders, you can choose a sheet length from 12 inches up to 240 inches (20 feet). Current prices for each size are listed on the product pages.

What file format and resolution do you need?

Check your artwork against this list before you order:

  • File format: PNG with a transparent background is recommended. Our uploader also accepts JPG, SVG, PDF, PSD, AI and EPS files.
  • Background: any background color in your file will print, so remove any background you don't want on the transfer.
  • Size: set your artwork to the exact size you want printed. Gang sheets must be 22 inches wide.
  • Resolution: 300 DPI at print size is recommended.
  • Orientation: do not mirror your design. Upload it exactly as it should appear on the finished item.
  • Final check: double-check spelling, spacing and image quality.

We print your artwork as submitted and do not edit or modify files.

Do I need special equipment or software?

You don't need special software. You can build gang sheets on our website with the Gang Sheet Builder, or prepare your artwork in any design software and upload it. To apply DTF transfers, you need a heat press (see below). UV DTF transfers are peel-and-stick and do not need a heat press.

Application and care

Can I apply DTF transfers myself?

Yes. Apply DTF transfers with a heat press, which delivers the even heat and pressure a transfer needs for consistent results. We do not recommend household irons or handheld craft presses.

What heat press should I use, and what settings?

Air-compressor (pneumatic), electric and manual heat presses all work. Set your press to 315°F–325°F, use medium-firm pressure and press for 6–12 seconds. Then peel the film immediately while it is still hot (hot peel). For step-by-step directions, see our Heat Press Instructions.

How do I apply UV DTF transfers?

UV DTF transfers are peel-and-stick, so no heat press is needed. Apply them to clean, dry, smooth hard surfaces such as glass, metal, ceramic, hard plastic and sealed wood:

  1. Peel off the backing.
  2. Place the design on the surface.
  3. Rub firmly over the design with a squeegee or card.
  4. Slowly peel away the top film.

UV DTF transfers are not intended for fabric. Let the transfer set for 24 hours before washing the item. Hand washing is recommended; avoid dishwashers and soaking.

Shipping, payment and returns

What is your turnaround time?

Orders placed by 2 PM ET on business days (Monday–Friday, excluding US federal holidays) ship the same day; orders placed after 2 PM ET ship the next business day. See our Shipping Policy for details.

How much does shipping cost, and where do you ship?

We ship within the United States only. We offer free shipping on orders of $120 or more (Economy shipping). Otherwise, shipping rates are calculated at checkout and shown before you pay.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover and Diners Club.

What is your return and refund policy?

Custom-printed items, including all DTF and UV DTF transfers, gang sheets, and custom apparel and drinkware, are final sale. Because we print your artwork as submitted, they cannot be returned for a change of mind or for errors in the artwork you submitted. If your order arrives misprinted, defective, damaged or incorrect, email info@dtfsirius.com within 7 days of delivery with your order number and clear photos, and we will reprint or refund the affected items. Unopened DTF inks may be returned within 30 days of delivery; email us first for return authorization. For full details, see our Return and Refund Policy.
