DTF Transfer Size Chart: What Size Should a DTF Transfer Be

What size should a DTF transfer be? Most DTF transfer sizes fall into a handful of standard ranges: an adult full front runs 10 to 12 in wide, a left chest logo size is 3 to 4 in, a youth shirt design size is 8 to 10 in, a toddler print is 5 to 7 in, and a hat transfer is 2.5 to 3.5 in wide. We price every transfer by the square inch at about 4 cents per square inch, so a 3.5 x 3.5 in left chest logo runs about $0.49 and an 11 x 14 in full front runs about $6.16, with no minimum order. Order by 2 PM ET Monday through Friday and it ships the same business day with tracking from our shop in upstate New York.

DTF Transfer Size Chart

This DTF transfer size chart covers the placements we print most often, with a recommended width, a typical width x height, and an approximate price at our standard per-square-inch rate. Common DTF transfer sizes range from a 2.5 in hat front up to a 14 x 16 in full back print, and if you're wondering how big a DTF transfer should be for a hat, keep it under 3.5 in wide since curved cap panels have limited flat space. Use the table as a starting point, then measure the actual garment before you order — a youth medium and a youth large can differ by an inch or more across the chest.

Placement / garment Recommended width Typical size (W x H) Approx. price
Adult full front (S-M) 9-10 in 10 x 12 in $4.80

Youth full front 8-10 in 9 x 11 in $3.96
Toddler (2T-5T) 5-7 in 6 x 7 in $1.68

Every size above can be ordered individually on our DTF Transfers by Size page, where you pay only for your design's rectangle, not a fixed sheet.

How to Measure a Shirt for Placement

Lay the garment flat and measure chest width from armpit seam to armpit seam. As a rule of thumb, a full front DTF size should land at about 50-60% of that flat chest width, so a 20 in flat chest suits roughly a 10-12 in wide print, while a 16 in youth chest suits an 8-10 in wide design. For a left chest logo size, measure 3-4 in in from the center seam and 2-3 in down from the collar seam, and keep the design inside that pocket-sized rectangle so it does not creep toward the shoulder or armpit.

Placement Guide by Design Type

  • Full front: center the design 2-3 in below the collar seam so it clears the neckline on both tee and hoodie styles.
  • Left chest: align the vertical center of the design with the armpit line, about 3-4 in from the center of the shirt and 2-3 in below the collar seam.
  • Back: start 4-5 in below the collar seam so the design sits between the shoulder blades rather than up on the neckline.
  • Sleeve: a sleeve print size usually runs 3 x 3 in for a small logo up to a 3.5 x 12 in long strip that wraps partway around the arm; center it on the outer sleeve, roughly 2-3 in up from the hem.

Youth and Toddler Size Scaling

A youth shirt design size should scale down from the adult version, not just shrink edge to edge — fine details and small text can disappear below about 8 in wide. Youth small through large reads clearly at 8-10 in wide; toddler 2T-5T keeps proportion at 5-7 in. If you're asking what size DTF for a 3T shirt specifically, 5-6 in wide is typical, since 2T and 5T chests can differ by 3-4 in. Infant bodysuits run smaller still, at 4-5 in wide, centered on the chest panel above the snaps.

Hoodie Pocket Limits

A DTF transfer size for hoodie fronts is limited by the kangaroo pocket on pullover styles — keep the design above the pocket seam, typically 10-11 in wide by up to 8-9 in tall. Full-zip hoodies without a center pocket can take a larger front print, closer to the 11 x 14 in adult full-front size. See DTF press settings by fabric for fleece-specific pressing notes, since hoodies need a pre-press step to flatten the fabric first.

What to Do With a Design That's Not the Right Aspect Ratio

If a square logo needs to fill a full front, either size it to the narrower dimension and accept some open space on the other axis, or extend the design with a frame, stripe or text so it matches the target rectangle. Because we price by the square inch, cropping tight to the actual artwork keeps the price down; getting the full front DTF size right matters for cost as well as fit, since a 10 x 10 in square costs less than the same logo centered on a 10 x 14 in canvas with blank space above and below it. Send the file at its true aspect ratio and size it on the DTF Transfers by Size page rather than stretching it to fit a preset.

How Size Affects Gang Sheet Cost

If you're printing more than one design at a time, a gang sheet is usually cheaper than ordering each size separately. Gang sheets are priced at $0.75 per inch of length on a 22 in wide sheet, about 3.4 cents per square inch, so the size of each design you place on the sheet determines how many fit and what the per-piece cost works out to. A 22 x 60 in sheet holds about 108 of the 3 x 3 in left-chest logos above (roughly $0.42 each) or around 8-10 of the 10 x 12 in full fronts (roughly $4.50-$5.63 each) once you account for 1/4 in gaps between designs. See DTF gang sheet pricing for the full price table, or build your own layout with the DTF Gang Sheet Builder.

File Setup for Accurate Sizing

Upload artwork as a transparent-background PNG at 300 DPI at the actual print size, not scaled up from a smaller file. Keep fine lines and small text at least 1 mm (about 0.04 in) thick so they don't drop out at press time, and don't mirror the file. A real person checks every file before it prints and will email you if something won't hold up at the size you chose. See how to prepare artwork for a DTF gang sheet for a longer walkthrough.

DTF Transfer Size FAQ

What size should a DTF transfer be?

It depends on the garment and placement: a left chest logo is typically 3-4 in wide, an adult full front is 10-12 in wide, a youth front is 8-10 in, and a toddler print is 5-7 in. Measure the actual garment's chest width before ordering.

What is a good DTF transfer size chart to start from?

Use the table above as a baseline, then adjust: full front should be about 50-60% of the garment's flat chest width, left chest should fit a 3-4 in square below the collar, and hat fronts should stay under 3.5 in wide.

How big should a DTF transfer be for a hat?

Most hat fronts run 2.5-3.5 in wide by 2-2.5 in tall, and trucker-style hats with more panel space can take up to about 4 x 2.25 in. See DTF transfers for hats for curved-panel sizing and press settings.

What size DTF for a 3T shirt?

About 5-6 in wide is typical for a 3T tee, though 2T through 5T chests vary by 3-4 in, so measure the specific shirt's flat chest width and keep the design at roughly half of that number.

What size should my DTF prints be for a full back?

Adult full-back prints typically run 12-14 in wide by 14-16 in tall, starting about 4-5 in below the collar seam so the design sits between the shoulder blades.

What's the right DTF transfer size for hoodie fronts?

On a pullover hoodie, keep the design above the kangaroo pocket seam, usually 10-11 in wide by up to 8-9 in tall. Full-zip hoodies without a center pocket can take a larger print, closer to 11 x 14 in.

What sleeve print size should I use?

A small sleeve logo is usually 3 x 3 in, and a long wraparound design can run up to about 3.5 x 12 in. Center it on the outer sleeve roughly 2-3 in above the hem.

Does a bigger DTF transfer cost more?

Yes — we price by the square inch at about 4 cents per square inch, so a 3.5 x 3.5 in logo runs about $0.49 while an 11 x 14 in full front runs about $6.16. There's no minimum order either way.

Can I get a custom size that's not on the chart?

Yes. The chart above is a starting guide, not a fixed list — order any width and height on the DTF Transfers by Size page and we'll print your exact dimensions.
