How Much Do DTF Transfers Cost? Price Per Square Inch Explained

DTF transfers cost about 3.4¢ per square inch on a gang sheet at DTF Sirius, or about 4¢ per square inch ordered by size. Gang sheets are $0.75 per inch of length on a 22-inch-wide sheet (22 × 12 is $9, 22 × 60 is $45, 22 × 120 is $90), and transfers by size are about 4¢ per square inch, so a 4 × 4 in logo is about 64¢, an 8 × 10 in chest print about $3.20 and an 11 × 14 in back print about $6.16. UV DTF decals for hard surfaces are about 12¢ per square inch by size, or $2.00 per inch of a 22-inch gang sheet (about 9.1¢ per square inch). There is no minimum order and no setup fee, orders placed by 2 PM ET Monday through Friday ship the same day from upstate New York with tracking, and shipping is free on orders of $120 or more. The rest of this article explains where those numbers come from and how to get the most out of them.

Why DTF is priced by area

A DTF transfer is film, color ink, a white underbase and adhesive powder, and every one of those scales with the size of the print, not with how many colors are in it. That is why DTF shops price by area and why a six-color design costs the same as a one-color design of the same size. It is also why DTF has no setup fees: there are no screens to burn or plates to make. At DTF Sirius the price does not change with ink coverage either; a sheet with heavy white underbase costs the same per inch as a sheet of thin line art.

Three ways shops quote prices, and how to convert them

Compare suppliers in cents per square inch. Here is how our pricing reads in each unit so you can line it up against any quote.

Unit DTF Sirius How to convert
Per inch of a 22-inch-wide sheet $0.75 Divide by 22 to get price per square inch: 3.4¢
Per square foot about $4.91 A 22 × 12 sheet is 264 sq in, or 1.83 sq ft, for $9
Per sheet 22 × 12 $9, 22 × 24 $18, 22 × 60 $45, 22 × 120 $90, 22 × 240 $180 Divide the sheet price by its area in square inches
Per piece by size 4 × 4 about 64¢, 8 × 10 about $3.20, 11 × 14 about $6.16 Multiply width × height × 4¢

Gang sheet or by size: a different thing you pay for

A gang sheet works out to about 3.4¢ per square inch; transfers by size are about 4¢ per square inch. By size, you pay for each design's own rectangle and nothing else. On a gang sheet, you pay for the whole sheet, empty space included, in exchange for putting many designs on one upload and laying them out yourself. Three consequences:

  • Identical designs are simplest by size. Twenty-four 10 × 12 in fronts by size cost about $115 (24 × 120 sq in × 4¢). On a gang sheet with a 1/4-inch gap they need a 22 × 156 sheet ($117); packed edge to edge, a 22 × 144 ($108). The two come out close, and by size needs no layout work.
  • Mixed designs are where a gang sheet earns its place. Ten different designs in five sizes go on one sheet, in one upload, with spacing you control. The cost per square inch comes in below by-size when the sheet is full.
  • Irregular shapes can be cheaper on a gang sheet. By size charges the full bounding rectangle of each design, so a round 10 × 10 in logo pays for its empty corners. On a gang sheet you can tuck 2 × 2 in tags into those corners and pay for them once.

Worked examples

One shirt, one design

A single 10 × 12 in front print by size is about $4.80. The smallest gang sheet is $9, so by size is the right call for a one-off.

Fifty left-chest logos at 3.5 × 3.5 in

By size: 12.25 sq in × 4¢ is about 49¢ each, about $24.50 for fifty. On a gang sheet packed edge to edge, a 22 × 36 sheet ($27) holds 60, about 45¢ each, with ten spares.

A mixed Etsy week

Six 10 × 12 fronts, twelve 4 × 4 pocket prints and twenty 2 × 2 tags come to about 992 sq in, roughly $40 by size. The same designs nest on a 22 × 48 gang sheet for $36 in a single upload, with the tags tucked into gaps around the fronts. Either way it is about $1 per item on average.

A team order: 24 fronts and 24 numbered backs

Twenty-four 10 × 12 fronts plus twenty-four 8 × 10 number panels are about 4,800 sq in of design, roughly $192 by size or $165 on a filled 22 × 220 sheet. Over $120, so it ships free. That is about $6.90 in transfers per shirt, front and back, on the gang sheet.

One hundred UV DTF logo decals at 3 × 2 in

By size: 6 sq in × 12¢ is about 72¢ each, about $72 for a hundred. On a 22 × 40 UV DTF gang sheet ($80) you can fit about 100 with gaps, so by size is cheaper for a single repeated decal. Order UV DTF by size for labels and logos; use the UV DTF Gang Sheet Builder when you are mixing cup wraps and stickers of different sizes.

What drives the cost up or down

  • Design area. The only thing that changes the per-piece price. Shrinking a front print from 12 × 14 to 10 × 12 cuts its cost by size from about $6.72 to about $4.80.
  • How well you fill a gang sheet. Empty inches cost the same as printed ones.
  • Pre-cut. Priced on request; arrives ready to press. Skip it if you are happy to cut with scissors.
  • Shipping. Free at $120; below that, rates are shown at checkout.
  • DTF or UV DTF. UV DTF costs more (about 9.1¢ per square inch on a gang sheet, about 12¢ by size) because it is a UV-cured print with its own adhesive and transfer film, built for hard surfaces without a heat press.
  • Quantity. The rate is the same at every quantity. Shops ordering 50 or more sheets a month can email info@dtfsirius.com for volume pricing.
  • Rush. None. Same-day shipping by 2 PM ET is the standard service.

What a finished shirt costs

Transfer cost is one line. Add the blank garment and a few minutes of pressing (315–325°F, 6–12 seconds, hot peel). As a rough guide, the transfer is about 36–64¢ for a left-chest or pocket logo, about $3.20 for an 8 × 10 chest print and about $4.50–$6.16 for a full front or back. Pressed correctly, the print lasts 50+ washes, so there is no reprint cost to build in.

How to pay less for DTF transfers

  1. Fill the gang sheet. Use the builder's full 22-inch width; two 10-inch-wide fronts fit side by side.
  2. Group designs so small logos, tags and sleeve hits fill the gaps around large prints.
  3. Order identical designs by size rather than on a mostly empty sheet.
  4. Check the actual size you need. A 10-inch front on a youth small is too big anyway.
  5. Combine orders to reach $120 and ship free.
  6. Cut your own transfers instead of ordering pre-cut.
  7. Get the file right the first time: transparent PNG, 300 DPI, not mirrored, spelling checked. We print exactly what you send, and a reprint for a typo is a second order.

How DTF compares with other methods on cost

Screen printing gets cheap per shirt at high quantities but carries a setup charge per color and usually a minimum, which makes small or multi-color runs expensive. Direct-to-garment has no setup but is priced per garment and requires the printer in-house. Heat-transfer vinyl is cheap per sheet but single-color and slow to weed. DTF sits in between: no setup, full color, no minimum, and pressed on your own equipment, which is why it has become the default for runs from one shirt to a few hundred.

FAQ

How much does a DTF transfer cost per shirt?

About 36–64¢ for a left-chest or pocket logo, about $3.20 for an 8 × 10 chest print and about $4.50–$6.16 for a full front or back, at about 3.4¢ per square inch on a gang sheet or 4¢ by size.

How much is a DTF gang sheet?
